What’s the Difference Between a Life Coach and a Psychologist?
If you have considered hiring a life coach or a psychologist and are wondering which one may be best for you – I’ve written a handy guide to the differences, so you decide what’s right for you.
Life coaching is the process of helping people identify and achieve personal goals through developing skills and attitudes that lead to self-empowerment.
Life coaching generally deals with issues such as work-life balance and career changes, and often occurs outside the workplace setting. The coaching sessions normally go for 1 hour and focus on goal setting whilst addressing mental hinderances towards personal goals.
I recommend a life coach if you are not dealing with trauma and or fears and anxiety around your life and goals, as life coaches are not qualified to be able to work with psychological issues.
A life coach can be great for setting goals as long as you have effectively achieved a similar goal previously. Learn about the different tools life coaches use to assist in goal setting, and why I refuse to use them in my coaching sessions here.
A Psychologist studies normal and abnormal mental states, perceptual, cognitive, emotional, and social processes and behaviour by experimenting with, and observing, interpreting, and recording how individuals relate to one another and to their environments.
One of the treatments a psychologist may use, is cognitive behavioural therapy – which I feel is an outdated therapy when it comes to working with the mind.
